As of January 26, new 2012 poverty guidelines published by the Department of Health and Hospitals have gone into effect.
US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) uses a 125% multiplier of the guidelines to determine the minimum income a petitioner must make to be able to qualify as sponsor for a family-based immigrant. Those looking to petition for a family member should review the guidelines and be prepared to show income of at least 125% of the amount shown for their family size, or find a joint sponsor who qualifies under the same guidelines. USCIS has not updated its guidelines for 2012 but change from the agency is expected at any time. Petitioners who have questions about the income requirements and possible alternatives should consult an experienced immigration attorney.
